One of the first jobs I ever had as a teenager, besides delivering news papers, was working for a pizza restaurant. I specialized in dish washing and mopping floors. Pizza parlors are one of the top industries in the country today hiring our teens. But do parents really know the exposure that job can have on them?
In today’s “Instant Gratification” world – the delivery of pizza has become more and more popular. Instead of eating out, more people are having their food delivered to the comforts of their home. When hired to deliver food, most employees are asked to use their own vehicles. For most, the employee expects the employers commercial insurance would cover them, or their own auto insurance would protect them in the event of a accident. Unfortunetly in most cases NEITHER policy covers the delivery vehicle owned by the employee – not covered by the commercial policy because the vehicles is not owned by the company, and in most cases not covered by the employees insurance because they are using it for delivery!
Most insurance companies do not cover your vehicle if you are using it for delivery – so it is crucial that you check with your insurance agent if you or someone in your family is using the family vehicle for pizza delivery. Most insurance policies would NOT cover the vehicle if used for delivery, but with many companies a simple rider can be added or at least the usage (food delivery) be noted so that the company would then cover the vehicle.

This is so true. My neighbors son got a job at a pizza place as the delivery boy, and he got in a fender bender while delivering pizza. The assumed that the pizza places insurance would cover the damage – but it didn't. And there insurance denied the claim also because he was delivering pizza's and they did not disclose that to the insurance company????
