Recently I was asked if your personal auto insurance policy would cover you if you chose to drive for Uber? Some of you may be asking “what is Uber“?
What is Uber?
Uber is a mobile software company that developed a app that consumers use to hire a driver for their transportation needs. The company started in San Fransico and has grown rapidly to service many cities all across the country.
Initially Uber utilized professionally licensed limo services to provide the transportation, but in 2012 they added another line of service called Uber X that utilizes transportation servcies from non-professional drivers who are looking to earn some extra income. Anyone can apply to be a Uber X driver and each application is screened by Uber. Once approved the Uber X drivers would be utilizing their personal vehicles for paid rides.
This raises the primary question of the day – if I chose to drive my personal vehicle as a Uber X drive would my auto insurance cover me?
Does my insurance cover me?
The answer to this question totally depends on who your auto insurance carrier is and what restrictions they have on your policy. It is my understanding that most carriers would not cover a claim that occurred while using your personal use vehicle for hire. It is very important that you check with your agent or call your insurance company before assuming your insurance policy would automatically cover you.
So what if my insurance policy doesn’t cover me?
Well in doing some research on the Uber Blog site I did find out that in early 2013 Uber took out a policy that would cover over the Uber X drivers who’s personal insurance policy would not cover a claim that arose while for hire.
